Seenigama Muhudu maha viharaya is situated about 2KM away from Hikkaduwa towards Colombo on the main Galle road. The “Kovil”or “Vihaaraya” is situated on its own island and is visited and worshipped by people from many religions. If you travel by bus or tuk tuk or even with a driver who is Sri Lankan you will fnd people stand up off their seats even white driving out of respect for this sacred spot. Most vehicles including public busses stop and offer pennants to the temple via donations to a till located on the temple wall alongside the main road. Travelers need to dress in long trousers to cover their legs and wear modest closed attire when visiting the temple and you are asked to remove headgere amd foot wear when entering the temple so it is wise to avoid the noon day sun and visit the temple either in the evening or early morning.
Seenigama Muhudu Maha viharaya is famous due the deity in charge of the temple and it is also a place famous for those who have been robbed to seek retribution. Devotees and visitors get to the main temple via boat, there you can buy a special oil made of chilli and pepper to be lit at the altar while reciting a mystic mantra asking for retribution from the robbery committed against them.
It is also remarkable to note that although the temple was in direct line with the tsunami that wrecked the southern coast this sacred temple was left untouched by the disastrous wave.
