USSANGODA NATIONAL PARK TANGALLE
Ussangoda National Park is the newest and the country’s 21st national park. It was established to provide long term protection for the area’s biological, archaeological and geographical values. The park borders the Kalametiya Wildlife Sanctuary in the east. Ussangoda is also an important breeding ground for sea turtles (Southern turtle breeding zones).
The park’s soil consists of an unusual red earth not found elsewhere in the island. Stunted vegetation too is unique to this patch of land and some myths say that this red earth and its vegetation is a result of a meteor rock which had crashed many thousand years ago. There are several archaeological sites as well and Hindu mythology says King Ravana landed his peacock chariot in Ussangoda
